In the 1980s the infamous Group B rally class produced some of the craziest cars the world has ever seen. One particularly interesting mutation we got is the mid-engined hatchback. Here's some of those Group B anomalies, along with some additional madness.
Lancia Delta S4 Stradale - For Group B homologation 200 of these Italian hatchbacks were made. The S4 used a 1.8 twincharged four that made 250hp driving all four wheels.
Peugeot 205 T16 - T16 is a pretty unassuming name for how different this car is from the standard 205. This Pug uses a 200hp four and has all wheel drive.
Renault 5 Turbo - Another name that doesn't convey the radical chages this car underwent. The five turbo is one of the most famous mid-engined hatches. It makes a relatively low 158hp, but with over 3500 made they're a fairly attainable exotic.
MG Metro 6R4 - Despite looking like a 14 year-old's wet dream the 6R4 is probably the highest performing car here. A 250hp turbocharged V6 (same engine as the Jag XJ220) sat in the back of the lowly Metro.
Renaultsport Clio V6 - This non-Group B based car was a bit of a call back to the Renault 5 Turbo. Unlike the 5 Turbo the Clio V6 used a 250hp V6.
Ford Shogun Festiva- Not production car but it's worth mentioning. The SHOgun used the powertrain of the Taurus SHO and stuck them in the back of a tiny Festiva.

I've seen a few, never been in one though. By all accounts they were truly dreadful cars, batshitness aside. Terrible handling, despite being mid-engined, and slower point to point than the regular hot Clio, the 172/182 Cup.
The final version of the 182 was the Trophy, and that's widely hailed as one of the greatest hot hatches.
Come to think of it, I wonder how much they go for here now...

That's a festiva not a fiesta.
